Olu Maintain - Yahoozee

In case you’ve missed it, Olu’s Yahoozee is the one of the songs given incessant rotation on the naija air waves. The video hit the web several weeks ago and with it came rave commentary. I had high expectations given some of Olu’s previous work as part of Maintain, but after watching I wondered what all the noise was about. It seemed like just another dancefloor track with very little else going on. The video could be a parody of a bad rap video. It reminded me of the brilliant and very funny video for “What They Do” by The Roots.

And if one video wasn’t enough, the remix version takes it to another level, complete with a blonde woman giving a Hummer a sponge bath! Wow.

I’d love to hear what the rest of you think.

  5. wienna Says:

I understand where you’re getting at. However, if i was asked to choose, i’ll choose d remix video to the original one cos there’s more dancing from d ladies. In the original video, they were just showing off dollars wey no get value anymore and drinks.

Off topic, abeg do u by any chance have Blackky’s contact details? I’d like his old tracks but i don’t know where to get it from. Thank you

  6. bobo Says:

Don’t have Blackky’s contact info. Your best bet on getting his old albums is probably in naija.

  7. liz Says:

  11. kazeem Says:

i will like to know the opinion of people abt the naija music industry these days, i want 2 know why artist with just one song get so much fame and success real quick for singing bullshit, the guy has an album out and the only track in it is the yahoozee,we shld ask him what next.if u actually break down what this guy is sayin in the music, its completely rubbish.
lets promote good naija music, what happened to the sound sultans, eldee, gt guitarman,2face,rugged,mode-9 etc, those are the real talents not all this olu maintan, jazzman olofin, and the rest. i think the naija industry has lost the music now bcos there is more money in it now than it use to be b4 so now nobody cares.

  12. wienna Says:

@kazeem, just souljah boy made a hit with just one single. A song dat’s meaningless with some annoying dance. At least Olu Maintain has been in d business b4 his hit single and he’s made some hits b4 too and hopefully he’ll make more hits with d rest of his album. Abeg, dis is his time to shine, the others have had theirs. B4 it was 2face dis, d’banj dat. It might be another artist next year. So, pls drop d complacency ojere.

  16. Chi-chi Says:

Yeah, your music is good and it shows that Nigeria has real talented guys. Keep it up

  17. Oladipo Oladipupo Says:

I prefer the original to the remix and I like the last section of the song where the lyrics say “Awon kon! jaye! Owo!” This is catchy … However, the song’s lyrics & visual content is vapid and the American-isms, showing Hummers, Hennessey, and Benjamins na ordinary unimaginative follow-follow.

Does Olu not realize that the saying “Benjamins” is outdated, especially with the massive de-valuation of the USD? Many countries no longer accept USD as the defacto black-market currency as it is now worth less than Canadian dollar and much much less than Euro, Pound and Yen. It certainly doesn’t have the same weight as in the 90-early 00s.

  18. Olubunmi Says:

  19. Kunle Says:

  20. Cisse .L (Guinea) Says:

Honestly i can spend a whole day listening to:Awon kon waye wa sise
myami waye wa jaye;Awon kon waye wa kowo;Awon kon waye wa sise.
Although it’s a kind like hard for me understand all. But i enjoy it chases away my stresses

  21. donnasclement Says:

  22. Erikah Says:

I don’t understand very well complete lyrics.
I haven’t seen lyrics online either, so I want to read em to try to understand.
I have to recognise that yahoozee and busy body are my favourite african songs.
I would like to hear someday one song that is against nigerian prostitution mafia in Spain and Italy.
Olu, why don’t you write a song to enhance Nigeria dignity and to give these nigerian women courage to fight this modern slavery.
Maybe I sound offensive but it could be tittled “From Benin to Gran Via, dey all donkia”
