Mode9, Nigeria’s bravest lyricist

You know that feeling you get when you discover something special, something rare or extraordinary? It’s the feeling of finding a sealed 1985 Dele Abiodun album in a dusty San Francisco record store. And it’s the feeling I got early last year when I first heard the music of Mode 9. His unique sound and fresh attitude immediately sets him apart from the often cliche naija hiphop acts and rappers, but we wanted to know more… so we decided to sit down and allow Mode 9 the opportunity to share a few words on himself, his music and the state of hip-hop in Nigeria.

bobo (naijajams.com): Mode 9 is a rapper, or better yet, an MC… and the music you produce is pretty distinct from much of the other Hip-hop coming out of Nigeria. How did this come about & how do you see yourself in the Nigerian music scene?

Mode9: I’m more of a poet, some sort of a lyricist like William Wordsworth. I read alot and take my music seriously, even though people in the Nigerian Music Industry do not understand what im doing they have no choice but to respect me. Most times they refuse to put me on major shows cos they think I’m not commercial enough, but people in Nigeria are not as dumb as they think. they feel my music… I see myself as the bravest lyricist in Nigeria i am not a gangster Rapper.

Interesting comparison to Wordsworth… are we talking about the same Wordsworth… the 19the century English poet? What particularly about Wordsworth do you identify with?

He was really nice with the quill, so I guess when I put pen to paper I’m kind of like the modern day Wordsworth.

Are you familiar with the work of the US-based poet Saul Williams?

Yes! I’ve got his album Amethyst Rockstar really cool, these days I’m listening to a lot of spoken word . They got a lot to say unlike most rappers these days.

You’re based in North-central Nigeria – in Abuja. Traditionally, what is the music like in Abuja? How does the contemporary music compare? And how does yours fit in?

I moved to Lagos in January 2005. Quit my job (Rhythm 94.7) moved to Lagos because a lot of people were not feeling the hiphop thing in Abuja even though we got far better talent over there, we were not respected. They rather bring somebody from lagos to perform at their shows.

I hear you, musicians are often only appreciated at home after they leave and “make a name for themselves” elsewhere.

Thats really true ! and now that I’m on MTV its a different cup ‘a tea.

Mode9, Modenine, Nigerian Hiphop, Rap

How do you find Lagos? What’s the scene like there?

Lagos is hard as hell, if u ain’t strong you’ll go down fo’ sho’.

Are you still in radio, working elsewhere or focusing exclusively on music/reading/listening/poetry?

I’m not on radio at the moment but I am planning to do a sponsored Hiphop (real hip[hop) show on radio… I did an online radio program for www.africanhiphop.com (africanhiphop radio) I also got a 106&Park like show on TV in the works. I still read a bit even though I’m pretty busy.

You mentioned above that acts from Lagos were brought to Abuja to perform even though there was better talent locally… Do you feel that Abuja has a better musical (hip-hop) culture than Lagos? If so, in what regard?

I wont really say that , but in Abuja we got a lot of real emcees doing real hiphop . In Lagos, real emcees get caught up en try to do the other stuff for mainstream appeal , I feel its a waste of talent . There are a number of heads in lag but nobody gives em a chance in Abuja people don’t really care. I guess people just wanna dance.

Where do you draw your inspiration? Who are your influences? Who do you collaborate with?

I draw inspiration from most of the books i read, I’m basically a loner so i don’t really bother about featuring other rappers . rite now im listening to a lot of Justus League & Little Brother, production by 9th Wonder.

As some would say, “recording album no be yam o!” You’ve produced two albums to date. Describe the challenges associated with producing, recording, marketing and distributing music in Nigeria. Were there any special challenges you’d like to talk about?

Its crazy! You gotta be up and about and at the end of the day you still get cheated by your marketer/pirate. The recording part isn’t really bad . We gotta contend with wack studio engineers but apart from that everything is pretty smooth. For my mixtape malcolm ix… I had to do all the promo myself shoot two videos Elbow room and Formidable which are now on MTV Base… like I said its crazy! You gotta be strong.

Your story seems all to familiar – that seems to be the norm rather than the exception in Naija. You mentioned that you’re a bit of a loner and much of the work on those albums were done solo. Do you do all your own production as well? Do you work with other musicians &/or producers?

I produce a little but id rather somebody more competent on the boards to take care of biz , i worked with G-links , Seth , blast, Eldee and Freestyle. On my Mixtape now I’m working with Cobhams, Jonah Monarch and Paul Play on my new album.

Mode9, Modenine, Nigerian Hiphop, Rap

What are your current projects? Is a new album in the works?

The new album will be called “E pluribus unum”...(one amongst many) presently im recording a mixtape with Jonah the monarch.

Which Nigerian artists are you feeling at the moment?

Are there promotors, venue owners, night clubs, djs, etc. in Lagos that are supporting original modern naija music, particularly the kind of music you’re doing?

....not really , I get people telling me to switch up my style like “you must relate to all the street people in Nigeria ” but I simply do stuff my way, thats why my songs are not hot in clubs over here. Most promoters don’t even know anything about hiphop thats why i ain’t gettin’ no big shows but i couldn’t be bothered a few dj’s show me mad love though i cant front.

What spots do you like going to?

Apart from the studio, well I’m not an out door person . I love watching TV at home

My experience in buying music in Lagos has been spotty. Where would you recommend someone in Lagos go to buy music? What shops are known for stocking “good” music, not just music that will sell (tokumbos).

Numetro silverbird galleria thats where you get some good stuff!

You mentioned early on that there was some confusion over the type of music you’re making… something about you not being into afro hip-hop? From what I’ve seen of your music & style, I don’t get that from you. Mind explaining where that came from & what it’s all about? Is there anything else you would like to say to ad? Anything for your fans? Your critics?

Afrohiphop is a joke! so even if i rhymed directly over a Fela loop id still not call it afrohiphop … I’ll call it “africanhop”...REASON.. once upon a time there was an association called afrohiphop artistes of Nigeria and they almost messed up the whole game that is why i have a problem with being labeled afrohiphop its the name not the music, hell i did a song with Lagbaja didn’t I?

as for my haters ..i love u guys picture me rolling hahahha. my fans just keep the fire burning en stick with me. ...critics …say whut yall want ..yall can front i got some mad punchlines!!

[...] Talking of interviews, Naija Jams recently dropped a post on an interview with Nigeria’s hottest talent Mode 9. Mode 9’s is also popular for one of his hip hop songs “419 state of mind part II“. The song is a cautionary tale to the would-be advance fee fraud victim told over a beautiful, bouncy beat. “You know that feeling you get when you discover something special, something rare or extraordinary? It’s the feeling of finding a sealed 1985 Dele Abiodun album in a dusty San Francisco record store. And it’s the feeling I got early last year when I first heard the music of Mode 9.” [...]

[...] In addition to profiling delegates and letting you know about resources, we want to use our shared webspace to talk about those other pieces of engagement – the culture, music, art, ideas, whatever – that capture our minds and make us excited to be part of a big world.  What do you think of when you think “world music?” For me, its things like liveireland.com. It’s Amr Diab, Nancy Ajram and sugary Arabic pop. If I want something a bit more rebellious, it’s Fela Kuti. Whatever it is, the central defining feature of my “world music” is that its things that I’d be happy and excited to share with my parents – its music that is safe. A part of me has always put “world music” on a different plane because of this feeling of safeness. Music is a road into different ideas and cultures, sure, but is the world music we consume in America giving us the full picture? Its not that I don’t think the music we do have access to isn’t wonderful – its that I wonder if it represents the complete spectrum of music being produced. Recently, I’ve been excited by African hip-hop in the form of Emmanuel Jal. Emmanuel Jal is a former child soldier from Sudan who recently rose to the top of the pop charts in Kenya. He’s been featured on NPR for his incredible story and positive musical messages.  But there’s still something strange about it. A former child soldier rapping with slow beats and positive messages…its inspiring, but where’s the intensity? Where’s the seething? Where’s the fucking Rage Against the Machine? Where’s the question of why Sudan continues to burn and child soldiers are forced to kill all over the world? As someone who’s always looked to angry music to find the sonic equivalent of my physical frustration, it seems off just a little bit. How excited was I then to stumble across www.naijajams.com a Nigerian music blog dedicated to giving exposure to lesser known local artists from Nigeria. I started to dig around the site; I read their pieces on Fela and Femi Kuti. I read their pieces on Afrobeat. And then I read their stories about Naija hip-hop. Bam – there was the intensity. Unsuspectingly, I opened a music video clip by an artist I’d never heard of – Mode Nine. With all too much cultural imperialism, I expected to hear the relatively weak beats and sloppy rhymes I associate with most world hip-hop. I expected lyrics that dealt vaguely with local problems, but don’t offer any real threat to the establishment. How wrong I was. Mode Nine is pissed. Formidable, the music video I opened, shows an Emcee who’d be just as at home in Detroit as in Lagos. Hell, he’d probably argue that Lagos is harder than Detroit. Describing the song on his website, Mode says he’s “battling the end of the world on this one.” In an interview with the site, he tells naijajams.com that he’s influenced by what he reads – going to so far as to call himself a modern Wordsworth. He talks about the frustration of navigating the underground/mainstream hip-hop divide in Nigeria. And he brags a bit. Mode Nine is only one of many artists featured on the site who offer a very different side of world music. Some of them are great – some are terrible. But they are there, they are speaking with interesting and relevant voices and we’ve got access to them. [...]

The most substantial Nigerian rapper i’ve ever heard. I still have misgivings about the whole hip-hop thing in Africa, but i can only encourage mode 9. The guy has a strong grip on his craft and his confidence is real and strong. I’m sure mode 9 was one of those that grew up watching MTV, BET and such. What i’m starting to realize is that being real means doing what you understand most.
There’ll be more from me subseq, i really need to reflect on all this.

  98. A-kay47 Says:

its not that i hate mode9 but i hate him being juxtaposed with ruggedman. its like comparing curry and thyme, they r not the same seasoning. so leave ruggedman alone. mode9 u r good no doubt but until u nigerialize ur thing you will still be square peg in round hole. even the greatest rapper after pac, nas escober will never make hit in nigeria. cry, was more like it. i have heard all ur stuff and even relocated to dublin with a couple of them.
lastly dont always try to sound like a poet. its what i call 2pacism. we all love hiphop.

  99. vincent Says:

fo u rap cats,no matter the kinda hip hop u do,mainstream or fundamental,it’s all gud.KEEP UP UR GAME

    (IT’S UR BOI SLIM">OJE

  105. Lucien Grey Says:

Mode 9 is definately amongst the top 3 of Niaja’s finest hip hop artists, the other two being Freestyle and Overdose. He spits tighter than an igbo business man’s fist fuill of dollars. And he has depth and just doesn’t out words to rhyme without meaning. Yes he may not be commercial, but none of th commercial “rappers” can survive a rap off with him.Besides tight mcees like Common,Talib Kweli,Method Man,Black Thought. Don’t usually have commercially succcesful albums, but they are amongst hip hops most respected. I hope Mode 9 sticks to his style, because that is what make him one of the best, and some day he is going to be recognised for the lyrical genuisthat he is ,internationally.

  106. Tolu Ihidero Says:

Modenine is definately a good ambassador of Hip-Hop.I have been following him for sometime now and the guy really spits fire. One would be tempted to think he grew up in south central USA.I don’t think he has to water down his style of Rapping to sell his albums in Nigeria. Most of the Hip-Hop artistes we have in Nigeria today are wack. They play on the intelligence of Nigerians.Modenine has brought a fresh dimension to Nigerian Hip-Hop and should be appreciated for that.

Wole Soyinka does not write for everybody. If you’re able to read and understand his works, you are really intelligent.Modenine is a lyrical Soyinka. He does not rap for everybody. He is in a class of his own. Those that value his music will buy his CDs,while those that don’t like him will go for other artistes. And he wins awards anyway.Soyinka won a Nobel prize for his outstanding writing.Modenine will get a Grammy one day,if he continues with his style. He only needs to collaborate with major American Hip-Hop stars and producers.America is the home of Rap Music.Bronx,New York,right.Peace.

  107. nojeem okunade Says:

HII MODE, I REALLY LIKE UR SHIT. I MEAN YOU ARE THE BEST RAPPER IN NIGERIA NO MATTER WHAT. I LOVE YOU SO MUCH. AND I WILL BE LOOKING FORWARD FOR UR NEW ALBUM.

i think u tight as a rapper n u need to be given some credit for ur effort no doubt, for the fact we gat some real wack emcees sittin up sum like competition. and about u been the bravest or the best rapper, this nigga dont think so, why, every body gat his own style n to every body they are the best, there aint no best u jsut doin ur thing. i think u kinda like common but get off the clouds men with those poetry stuff get alittle down to earth n u get apprecited more cos majority will feel u. peace out.
