Lijadu Sisters: Horizon Unlimited
Whenever Kehinde and Taiwo Lijadu felt low down in spirit they indulged themselves in a childhood prank. They climbed the tallest nearest tree and watched the unlimited horizon. That was not the only trait they shared in common. They are identical twins who also share identical callings, habits, hobbies, a joint bank account and four children in between them. They never tell which one of them is the mother to which child. “They are four children,” they always said when asked.
Some twelve years ago (approx: 1967) they climbed a very tall tree and saw in the horizon unlimited, the path of their future.
The elements were orchestrating sweet musical vibrations that hit the core of the very being of the twins. It was the climax of their long-standing yearning to become professional singers. After all, it was all in the family. Daddy played the piano and Granny (on dad’s side) played the guitar. “So what about that?” They asked themselves.
They had enough inspirational heat in their veins to generate and power their interest and enthusiasm.
There was Daddy and Granny. There was Aretha Franklin and I.K. Dairo. There was Miriam Makeba and Victor Olaiya.
There was Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and a host of other musicians both local and international.
All of them together gave them all the heat of their inspiration. At such times when they were inspired it did not matter who conceived the ideas for lyrics or musical compositions.
What mattered was that they laboured together to bring forth the best of their brainchild.
The happiest moment that ever crowned their first attempt at creativity was when they walked into the chambers of Decca Studios with a handful of competent veteran session (musicians) to vax their first LP, “Iya Mi Jowo.” That was 1969. Since then Kehinde and Taiwo, (christened Louisa and Rosaline) have come a long way.
Over the years they have conceived created and recorded four long playing records all on Decca labels.
There was “Sunshine” and “Danger,” “Mother Africa” and “Iya mi Jowo” which have all gone down to their credit in the history books of the Nigerian music scene, amongst them a silver disk winner. This album is another step towards the fulfillment of the vision had of their future, many many years ago.
That vision they had of the “horizon unlimited.”
Ironically with Lijadu Sisters do not always speak about their future.
A reporter once asked them: Now that your horizon is opening up, what plans do you have for your future?
Lijadu Sisters: We don’t always look beyond our noses, because Man proposes but God disposes, but we are optimists.
R: Are you as rich as you are famous?
LS: As rich as rich can be. We are comfortable. We own one Volkswagen beetle and a joint bank account with plenty of money in it. Most of the time we are broke.
R: Are you religious?
LS: Very. We are catholics although not the Church going type. Every time we feel the spirit moving in our hearts we walk into the nearest church or Mosque and pray.
R: Do you have lovers?
LS: We are not dead. Not yet. We are living beings. To live and to love is the essence of our life. If you don’t have someone who loves you, you are dead. If we didn’t have lovers how come we compose love songs?
R: Do you take drugs?
LS: NO. We are permanently high.
R: You said you have four children but you are not married.
LS: We are not baby killers. Just because we had children with men we never got married to does not mean we had to kill them. We love children because children are a gift from God.
R: Would you have the same lover?
LS: If we did, we don’t see the need for it because there are many eligible men around. Even though we are twins, we want to be exclusive.
R: What do you think of yourselves?
LS: We are fantastic.
R: Do you wear the same clothes?
Kehinde: Taiwo is wearing my blouse and I’m wearing her wrapper.
R: What do you do when not singing?
LS: Playing with our kids, cooking, painting or climbing trees.
R: What kind of men would you like as friends?
LS: Simple, intelligent and responsible men.
R: Do you plan to get married?
LS: You talk too much.

actually, for the person who asked where Taiwo and Kehinde are now, last i heard they were living in Brooklyn, New York…
i’ve often flirted with the idea of tracking them down and coaxing them into the studio again! they were a very unique unit in the annals of Nigerian popular music. and the “Danger” album is KILLER!!
March 14th, 2006 at 3:33 pm
My dad was actually in love with the songs of these immense talents especially the ‘erere elejigbo’ track. I would be more than glad if I could lay my hands on any of their works….they always remind me of my childhood days.

I relly missed ‘em! If there can be a live interview of them in one of the Nigeria famous tv stations, I’ll greatly appreciate it, even nigerians will do as well. May be they can help alongside with Papa Tee and Beatifull Nubia here in Nigeria to fully bring poetry back to life the more again, for through it our morals are perfectly taught.
Kudos to them and their works of old!
July 21st, 2006 at 10:15 pm
I posted this on another site but I thought I’d ask here as well
I’m going to go out on a limb here and ask if anyone knows the title/artist of this song I just heard this weekend after such a long time…...........
it’s sung by a lady and the lyrics are in yoruba, they go something like this
‘iyawa e seun re re ti e a dara o
baba wa e seun re re ti a dara o….......
or something like that
it’s really old, I remember listening to it as a kid and it just brought back all sorts of memories, I’d like to buy it if I could only remember the song title. thanks
July 26th, 2006 at 4:09 am
Yoruba boy, the artiste is Christy Esiien Igbokwe.
July 28th, 2006 at 7:01 am
i neva knew that the sisters were still alive.where are they now and do they still have plans of bringing out alboms?
July 28th, 2006 at 2:35 pm
Saw the Twins recently, they still have their commanding presence and still “break-into-beautiful-harmonies” while talking. (first time I experienced that I was completely floored) Most of their music can be found on complication CD’s like Nigeria 70, Essential Afrobeat, Afrobeat Session etc – you will find that orele egigbo is the most licenced track – They are not really professionally active these day but support alot of young nigeria, yoruba, and really…. african artist who seek their advise. They can be found enjoying the Outdoor Music Series at Prospect Park, Brooklyn…..I am sure if you look hard enough you’ll see the charismatic Divas at d Lagbaja segment of Africa Day on August 5th at Celebrate Brooklyn….

January 15th, 2007 at 12:40 am
When I first saw the sisters on the NTA early 80’s, I was 8 years then and childishly wished I could marry them someday, memories of their tracks (Urede, Iyami Jowo, Orere Elejigbo) will always be on my mind. Even my parents were so fond of them.
I have searched everywhere for their albums, even been to NuMetro,,,,no luck, guess I have to stay happy with memories only, but to anyone out there who knows them, just tell them they are marvellously LOVED
January 23rd, 2007 at 4:47 am

I am indeed honoured to stumble upon this blogging site that pays glowing tribute to my mum & aunt (the Lijadu Twins), who, as some people have accurately noted are alive, hale and hearty in Brooklyn, New York.
I am one of the luckiest young men around in that i consider myself having two mothers in this inseparable set of twins, who inspire, love, and nutured me (myself an upcoming artist under the name ‘Singa’) and share some of those nostalgic memories of seeing them on tv in the 80’s while we stayed in Oluyole Estate in Ibadan (where i was born). For those who would like to contact them in New York for their music, call +718-229-3209 or reach me or my sister, (Ayobami) on +2348023034439 or 234-1-8164769 in Lagos, Nigeria for more info. Thanks for this wonderful experience of being able to reach a fanbase of my mum’s that i would never have imagined ever exsisted. Ayodeji ‘omo Taiwo’, singerrich@yahoo.com

Please do me a favour by posting one of these wonderful sisters’ album that I am missing badly in my box for me to download. The title of one of the tracks in the album is ‘’Araye Mo Juba’‘. It is the only album out of all their productions that I dont have in my archives. I have every other one. Please do this for me or better still send their contact address and e-mail address including their phone numbers to my box so I can contact them directly but if you can assist me in this regard, I shall seriously appreciate it.
Regards.
