Weird MC - Riranwo

Weird MC, The Raptainer

Weird MC isn’t a new name in Naija music. If you’ve been to a naija party, wedding or the like in the last few years, you’ve probably heard her music. For more than a decade, Weird MC The Raptainer has been dropping afro-infused hiphop while splitting time between Naija and the UK. Her latest claim to fame was the appropriately titled Ijoya (previewed here in 2005)... a wildly successful dance track that racked up awards and packed dancefloors the world over.

Following closely on the heels of Ijoya, Weird MC returns with another great track. This time it’s Riranwo (Riran Wo – i.e. See Something.) It’s the first single off the upcoming album, New Dawn. Check out Weird MCs MySpace page for the latest information regarding the release and enjoy the track.

If you’re thirsting for fresh material right now, check out the excellent “with comb & razor” blog for heavy doses of Fela and other heavy sounds.

See you in two weeks.

Nas is Not Nigerian

Nasir Jones, better known as the rapper Nas has gone by a number of aliases over the years. So while Nas might be Nasty, Esco, Escobar, Nastradamus, The Streets Disciple, or God’s Son, one thing he is most definitely not, is Naija!

Some of you may be left wondering what this is all about, but among many Nigerians, there is this idea that Nas is Nigerian.

As my guy hemebob (awoof chopper #1) said earlier this week:

Kai… Nigerians sabi claim eh. Na so dem talk say NAS na naija boy sef.

2Face in Brooklyn, New York

Last weekend after reportedly making a stop at the Grammys, 2Face Idibia made his way to Brooklyn for an impromptu appearance and short performance at one of the local nightclubs.

After checking out the pictures, I have to say, something’s just not right about them. For starters, 2Face is wearing a Senegal jersey! In all honesty, it’s hard to blame him for not repping the Super Eagles after their performance at the African Cup of Nations. But where are all the ladies?! It looks like all the African Queens were up against some stiff competition fighting through all those men to get to 2face!
