I came across this video from Chiido called Gbejo by chance and it reminded me of why I like ChiiDo… he doesn’t take himself too seriously and his songs make me laugh. This track has some fresh pidgin rhymes in “part 2″ and lots of reasons to make you smile. Enjoy.
According to TheNews, Tuface was attacked and shot at his home last night after returning home from London.
“Hip hop music star, Innocent Idibia popularly known as Tuface, is currently on danger list at Cedar Group Hospital, 202 Road, B Close, Festac Town, Lagos, following an attack on him by unidentified gunmen last night. P.M.News learnt that the award winning artiste was attacked at about 8.30pm at Cele bus stop, along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway on his way home from the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja. He had just arrived the country from London.
Sources said the shots fired by the gunmen hit Tuface on his thigh and he was rushed to the hospital where doctors immediately wheeled him into the theatre to save his life.
As at the time of going to press, doctors had removed about 22 pellets from his thigh and he is currently battling for life at the hospital.” Source
(For what it’s worth, I’ve yet to see any other news sources corroborating this story)
Update: Times of Nigeria has posted a similar report. I wish Tuface all the best and a speedy recovery.
Update 2:Sun News reports indicate the attack occurred while driving… “Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, precisely at Cele Bus stop.” It looks like he’s in good spirits and will make a full recovery.
I know say this na naijajams and no be ghanajams, but I wanted to share a discovery that made my day. The artist is Wanlov. The song, “Smallest Time,” from his album Green Card (that incidentally just released today) is a savory mix of afrobeat-infused easy breezy california hiphop stylings with a mixture of pidgin and poetry. “My people, I dey greet you.”
If you’re feeling this song, be sure to pick up the album - you can order online, pay with paypal.
If you’re in the US, check out Wanlov live at his release parties in LA and NYC this week before he relocates to Ghana:
If you’ve been around naijajams for some time, you’ve definitely heard of DJ Dee Money. He’s become famous online for the prolific Naija Gbedu mixtapes releases (that are so numerous I’ve lost count!) Based in the Chicago area (USA), his sounds graced the airwaves, rocked parties and even won DJ of the Year award at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEA) 2006!
In a continued effort to promote Nigerian artists worldwide, and a growing desire to bring like-minded individuals together, Dee Money created the internet-based community called, “Nigerian DJs.” This is the place (as you might expect) to find top class Nigerian DJs. Check them out to hear some of the newest sounds from naija, or to find a dj to play at your next party.
Femi Kuti’s North American tour is winding down, and photos from the event have started to surface courtesy of some excellent photographers and flickr. Below are a few of my favorites thus far.
Make all of una recognize o! Femi Kuti dey yankee o!
Femi Kuti and the Positive force band are in North America for a 5 week tour to promote the new album, Femi Kuti - The Definitive Collection. This double cd release, draws the best of his self-titled debut album, Shoki Shoki and Fight to Win. It also includes Water No Get Enemy from the Red Hot + Riot album as well as a slew of the best remixes of his work. If you want to get up to speed quickly on Femi’s music, this is the best way to do it. While you’re at it, be sure to pick up the new(ish) cd + dvd, Live at the Shrine.
