50 Kobo

In the US there’s the ubiquitous 50 Cent and the G-Unit. In the UK/Naija there’s 50 Kobo and the Gidi Unit otherwise known as JJC (aka Skillz) and the 419 Squad.
Originally based in the UK, Skillz (aka Abdul Rasheed Bello) is indeed a JJC to the Nigerian hiphop scene. In 2003, Skillz founded the music production house, “Backbone Music” with the intent of bringing modern African music to a wider audience. Before Backbone, Skillz founded, sang in and produced the group R&B group “Big Brovaz” who found sucess in the UK singles chart with their hit “Nu Flow”which reached the #3 spot!
The song 50 Kobo uses 50 Cent’s In the Club as a template with the typical self agrandizing style (cars, girls, credit cards, money, etc. *yawn*), of commercial hip-hop, but done up Naija-Style so it’s actually kind of cool, but definitely more of a party track.
I got a chuckle out of the chorus’ lyrics:
You can find me in buka
eating amala
omo I got what you need
if you’re into drinking star
I’m into writing checks
can’t work behind the bar
come give me a hug
if you can cook eba!
I know there are definite skils where this came from and I’m looking forward to seeing more from JJC and co.

I’m curious - what did people dislike about the song? Lyrics, production, something else?
June 28th, 2005 at 4:25 am
that it was a copycat song, that the boys were low on ideas and that the song came out wack. but to me it was cool, the lyrics and the humour in the song
June 28th, 2005 at 10:58 am
Ok, I can see those points, but I see this merely as a fun party song… sure it’s a copycat song, but that’s the point. I’m not a huge fan of the wailing female vocals, but overall the song came out ok.

One cannot but be amazed at the music scene around the world. Yours gives a good taste of one conner of the world. I found several around the net about artists that “extend” others work. This how it should be in my opinion .

I am a graduate of Business Administration from the University of Ado- Ekiti, an idigene of Ogun State.
I have an unfading passion for music. I have some composed collections but I do not know how to go about it in order to actualise and realise my full potentials in the profession. I need an adviser, probably a promoter.
I would not mind, if I am booked for an appointment in order to verify my talents in the profession. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

I have an unfading passion for music. Having some well- composed collections and rhapsodies, I do not know how to go about it in order to actualise and realise my full potentials in music profession so as to make my dreams materialised and becoming a reality. I need an adviser, probably a promoter.
I would not mind, if I am booked for an appointment in order for you to authenticate and verify my talents in the profession. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Is anyone really listening to the lyrics., This sucks bad. Not only are they copying 50 cent without permission, which is stealing. But they also say they are into writing checks. So the Nigerian 419 boys are into writing checks? How retarded to tell on yourselves. Keep writing them checks, our government has already busted a few rings. Hey here’s an idea in your next song tell us where the rest of your rings are opporating. Stupid, fake, thieves that get busted. HAHA
