Abeg, borrow me that cd

I think all Nigerian music fans have at one time or another (but more likely all the time) experienced difficulty obtaining nigerian music. Especially difficult are new albums from lesser-known or upcoming acts.

If you’re in Lagos, your best bet is to head over to Silverbird Galeria, or you can try your luck at Alaba International. Otherwise, it’s a game of hit or miss with the local vendors and other shops.

It’s this very situation that makes the following intro skit from Black Tribe’s debut album so funny. Check out the choice quotes and audio below.

You get black tribe? You get the cd? Abeg, borrow me that cd…

Hey angela, how far?… Abeg, I fit collect black tribe cd for your hand…

Na me you dey curse? Because of black tribe?!

Eedris on the run-in with 50 Cent

Many of you probably heard about the reported scuffle between Eedris Abdulkareem and 50 cent in December 2004. The fight resulted in 50 cutting the tour short prior to the final show in Port Harcourt.

While the issue may seem like little more than a publicity stunt by Eedris, none of us were there and can only rely on reports and commentary. Check out this new video where Eedris gives his take on the situation at a live show in Germany a few weeks ago.

This quote had me rolling:

… so I told 50, I’ll see you in Port Harcourt and he ran back to America…

- Eedris Abdulkareem

Dj Dee Money - Naija Gbedu Part 3

Fresh off the heels of the popular Naija Gbedu Part 2, Dee Money presents Naija Gbedu Part 3! This mix continues the trend set with Part 2, with continuous infusions of naija classics, both old and new - there’s a little bit of everything in this mix… from Daddy Showkey & Ras Kimono’s reggae to JJC’s hip hop and Lagbaja’s afrobeat.

For those of you new to artists like 2Face Idibia, check out some of his older material as part of the Plantashun Boyz with You and I. Also check the shoutout by Eldee (of the Trybesmen) that hints at his upcoming album!

Big thanks to Dee Money & be sure to check out his website for upcoming events in the Chicago area!

Nas is Not Nigerian

Nasir Jones, better known as the rapper Nas has gone by a number of aliases over the years. So while Nas might be Nasty, Esco, Escobar, Nastradamus, The Streets Disciple, or God’s Son, one thing he is most definitely not, is Naija!

Some of you may be left wondering what this is all about, but among many Nigerians, there is this idea that Nas is Nigerian.

As my guy hemebob (awoof chopper #1) said earlier this week:

Kai… Nigerians sabi claim eh. Na so dem talk say NAS na naija boy sef.

ChiiDo - Pidgin English

The email we get here at naijajams can really be a mixed bag - on one hand, there are the conventional messages, but other times, we’re left scratching our heads. For example, today someone requested “4 or more tickets to the 2face concert.” Thankfully, for every email like that, we get quality material from Nigerian artists all over the world.

Until today, I’d never heard of the UK-based Naija rapper, ChiiDo, but after listening to a few bars, it was clear he was top class. Check out this fresh and funny music video for his first single, Pidgin English, off his debut release, “Afro knowledge…from Naija to London” due out this September. The video is great! I love that he’s rocking traditional in London while rapping in broken - quality material here folks!
